Privatization might be good for giving your political donors a place to rake in
more profit.
NASA is not a low earth orbit Amtrak. Their field is research of
aerospace technology. Early on their job was to figure out all the
ways to explode a rocket on launch and how to prevent that. Anyone
who wants to make a rocket has years of free research to help.
NASA also works on airplane technology like glass cockpits, new
types of engines, and lifting bodies. It does expensive research
for any and all airplane manufacturers, but it does not make or
fly commercial airplanes.
NASA does not do the majority of science on planets and stars. It
gathers measuring instrument requests from scientists and figures
out how to get those instruments in working order where the
scientists want them to go. It then gives the measurements to the
scientists to mull over and write their papers.
NASA continues to research how to get humans in earth orbit and
the moon, cheaply, efficiently, safely. But it is left to private
companies to decide if that is profitable, and invest their own
money in pursuit of profits.
The theory in America is privatisation in pursuit of private
profits is the best way to achieve public good. And the government
is responsible to ensure all private parties compete in a free
market on an equal basis.
Capitalism is self destructive so the government also protects the
public for the public good, and tries to keep private companies on
the rails instead of crashing through swamps.
Turning need into profit has been mostly excellent for the public
good. Privatisation has proven more successful than central planning.
